Subject: Guide to Pegasus Mail Addons List X-Last-Updated: 30 June 2003 Last-Updated: 30 June 2003 Posting-Frequency: Every Two Months Version: 2.4.5 URL: ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/ibmpc/dos/apps/pmail/pmail-addons.txt Pegasus Mail - Programs to Make a Good Program Even Better ========================================================== Compiled by Michael Bernardi This document is for those who need to use PMAIL in a slightly non standard environment. ie NOT just in Native Netware, MHS or via Mercury or Charon, or who want to add something to the standard installation. It attempts to list every program that can be used with any of the current versions of Pegasus Mail. NOTE I have NOT written ANY of the programs listed in this document. I just indicate WHERE you can get them from. Pegasus Mail has been created by Davis Harris, the only thing I have created is this list, my knowledge of the workings of Pegasus Mail are only as an interested user. For technical support please contact David Harris or the various support systems detailed below. Contents -------- [1] Introduction [2] Pegasus Mail by David Harris [3] MS-DOS Addons [4] Windows Addons [5] Macintosh Addons [6] NetWare/Network Addons [7] Indirect PMail Connection [1] Introduction ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was originally based in part on the Pegasus Mail User-Defined Gateways FAQ by David Harris. Although many of the programs listed ARE UDGs many are not. While I have used a FEW of the programs listed within this document most have been added at the suggestion of the author or other users. This list is a compendium of material I have discovered or have been told about by other Internet users. It gives the current/latest version of the program available (where known). There may be earlier versions available, but these are not normally listed. If you have found other PMAIL Addons useful, then please let me know, so that I can add them to this list. Please send any comments/corrections/updates/additions to: Michael Bernardi A prototype was first posted to the PMAIL List (bit.listserv.pmail) on 19 June 95, after the release of WinPmail ver 2.01. It was archived at risc.ua.edu for the first time as version 1.0 on 15 August 1995. Version 2.0.0 was released after my email address had been changed to mike_at_dendarii.demon.co.uk and the new WinPMail ver 2.23 released in December 1995. In July 1996 it was converted to HTML format by Chris Salter and with the release of WinPMail v2.42 (32-bit) the first 32 bit version of WinPmail, version 2.2.0 of this Guide appeared. Later HTML versions were created using Q-HTML by Craig Cockburn. Version 2.3.0 of this guide was released to coincide with the release of WinPmail 3.01d. With the closing of the bit.listserv.pmail gateway it is now only posted to comp.mail.pegasus-mail.misc. Version 2.3.4 included details of the new website address and the mirror site for this document and the html version and new autoresponder. Version 2.3.5 of this guide was released in December 2001 after the release of WinPmail 4.01, it included a major purging of dead links. Version 2.3.6 included a change of my email addresses, isp and the removal of the "@" and replacement with "_at_" in all contributors email addresses. Note that with the introduction of Windows 95 and later, the built in winsock means that WinPmail now has most of the connectivity required to send and receive mail without many of the programs below. While the version of software given is the latest I know of, newer versions may exist, if so please let me know. Also earlier versions of the software may still be available. This is important when, for example, some non-English language modules for Pegasus Mail are only available for the earlier version. URLs (Universal Resource Locators) have been used to give standard nomenclature for file/information location. This is the format used by the World Wide Web (WWW) and the Usenet newsgroup comp.infosystems.www.announce. URLs are detailed in:- "Universal Resource Identifiers in WWW" [Jun 94] by Tim Berners-Lee and also in "Uniform Resource Locators (URL)" [Dec 94] by URI-WG Some URL references can be rather long, and so are split/broken to wrap on to a second line. However when typed into a Web Browser the line break should be removed. The format of this document has been influenced by "The WinSock Client List" [Aug 95] by Ed Sinkovits This gave details of almost every Shareware, Freeware or Public Domain Windows program that uses the Winsock TCP/IP interface. The program information format is consistent and follows the layout below:- Name of program: Location/Filename: Date/Version: Author/email contact: Status: Shareware/Freeware/PD/Commercial Documentation: Features: Comments: Within this document the status of software is defined in the following terms. Commercial - You pay for a program, in advance from a shop or dealer Shareware - Try BEFORE you buy, but pay you must Bookware - The program is free BUT you pay for the documentation Cardware/Beerware - Free but the author would be happy to receive a postcard/beer GNU - With the spread of Linux the GNU GPL license has become widely used Freeware - Totally free to use but author retains the copyright Note in all cases above the author retains copyright of their program. PD/Public Domain - Free to use and the copyright has been given up by the author. The distinction between PD and Freeware is often confused, but is very clear in law. If the Status: label has more than one of these option selected then it means that its status is unclear (from the documentation given), unknown, or different parts of a package have different status. [2] Pegasus Mail by David Harris ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pegasus Mail is an electronic mail system for PCs and Macintoshes connected to Novell NetWare Local Area Networks and TCP/IP networks. It is full-featured, easy to install and maintain and best of all, it is completely free - you can use it on as many servers and PCs as you wish without any charge or obligation. It has its own transport agent which can deliver between NetWare servers without gateways, has full support for SMTP mail via either the Clarkson Charon SMTP gateway or David's Mercury Mail Transport System, and has full native support for NetWare SMF transports such as NetWare MHS and NetWare Global MHS. All standard mailer features are present, and a number of enhancements. By creating User Defined Gateways PMail can be used with other transport systems such as SMTP (KA9Q) and UUCP. The Mac version is currently in beta test and a new release should be out shortly. The Windows version is currently the most advanced of the three versions. The Windows versions now include an Extensions feature. This allows external programs to be run from within WinPmail. IMPORTANT: Enough is enough! - Pegasus Mail Message from David ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Effective immediately, the terms and conditions of use for Pegasus Mail are amended to include the following paragraph: The supply or promotion of Pegasus Mail for the purpose of sending bulk, unsolicited e-mail is incompatible with the basic aims of the program, which revolve around the free provision of a service that enhances the quality of peoples' communication. Pegasus Mail may not be included in any package designed for this purpose, whether free or otherwise, nor may vendors of such packages use the "Pegasus Mail" trademark or other related material in the promotion of their package. Vendors or suppliers currently including Pegasus Mail in their bulk e- mail products are hereby required to remove copies of and all references to the Pegasus Mail software from their products. Failure to comply with this requirement will lead to legal action. The assistance of all members of the PMAIL and PM-NEWS mailing lists in getting this message to vendors of mass-mail products would be gratefully appreciated: in many cases, these people do not have functional e-mail addresses and only have fax numbers. If you receive an obvious "spam", we would be appreciative if you would fax this message to the perpetrator. Pegasus Mail is a tool for quality communication, and we regard indiscriminate mass-mailing as an antisocial, irresponsible abuse of what we believe is our generosity in providing a service to the broader Internet community. David Harris. Author and owner, Pegasus Mail System. 14th November 1996. There is a Listserv list for people who use Pegasus mail.
